There are two passwords that can be used to protect a PDF.

1. Owner Password - Also known as "permissions" password. This allows anyone to read the document but they cannot perform certain actions such as modify the dates, print the document, etc.
2. User Password - Also known as "open" password. This encrypts the contents of the document allowing only the user with the correct password to read it.
