Graphics Interchange Format (GIF) image.
Description
GIF (pronounced JIF) was created by a company called CompuServe in 1987 to more efficiently push color images over dial-up modem lines. It quickly became a standard on Internet. This popularity lead to lawsuits because GIF uses LZW compression which was patented in 1985 by Unisys. These legal troubles were the inspiration to create the Portable Network Graphics (PNG) image format which is patent free.
